Engineering and fabrication of Windy for The High Line park in New York City
Windy, a large kinetic sculpture, was installed for one year aside the walkway in High Line park. It included custom machined motor components, welded steel structure, electronics, and loads and loads of low density foam. It was designed to run continuously in any weather and withstand up to 100Mph winds. So far it’s spun over 40 million revolutions. It weighs 400 pounds, mostly the steel plate holding it down on the bottom. Draws a surprisingly low 300 watts. We bolted it to the train tracks to keep it from dancing away.
